The Effects of Measurement on Physical Activity
Duke University Professor Jordan Etkin argued that it's because the act of measuring the output makes enjoyable activities feel more like work. In one study, 95 college students were asked to choose whether or not to wear a pedometer all day. Those who could see the steps ticking up throughout the day did end up walking more, but reported less enjoyment.
