Beth Foubert: There's a framework to explain this fascinating human behavior. She says it goes back 3,000 years to the hero of the Trojan War, Ulysses. He knew that he would end up dying if he heard the sirens' song and steered away from them. But he came up with a plan to deal with his future self by filling their ears with beeswax. Moubert: It was a deal struck between the present and the future Ulysses, and it worked.
