Interrupting the Thoughts
The Buddha put it this way, which I think is a great nutshell summary. Whatever a person frequently thinks and reflects on, that will become the inclination of their mind. We're so used to thinking about ourselves as a certain kind of person, including an unworthy person or an likable person or whatever. If we keep thinking it, it's there. And then our behaviors come out of it. Now we hopefully don't have a stroke.
