The Myth of Perfectionism
The myth of control is that if we do everything right and we tick all the right boxes, then we will eventually be rewarded in some profound way. The one illusory way of coping with that is to try as much as you possibly can to control it. I'm definitely not a perfectionist anymore, but I can think of a period of time throughout my 20s where I used perfectionism as just a really reassuringly absolute standard. It was like take Christmas, so long as I had anticipated everyone's needs... And none of them were actually changing the material experience of spending time with loved ones.
