What Was Happening in the Nineties?

In the nineties, despite the lack of commercial success for the sone, this is when it went underground. A lot of those experiments kind of presage things that happened in indy games years later. The interactive fiction competition was a big annual event where people would enter new tex games to kenna and show them off. That became a really interesting kind of space where you had all these people who weren't having their needs met by what mainstream were doing commercially but just decided to come together and make their own fun.
