I've been amazed the last few years with the pandemic how issues of epistemology have come to the fore and become hot political issues. Many theories and many policies are reasonable because there isn't a deep knowledge of what we're facing. And so then, you know, somebody will ask when I say this to people, they will ask, well, what do you think then? What is the thing we should do? And I have to keep saying, we do not know. That's how we always begin. We begin with conjectures. But unless we have good explanations, which is another thing we could get to, there's no point even in testing them. Without two good

David Deutsch (@DavidDeutschOxf) is a visiting professor of physics at the Centre for Quantum Computation, a part of the Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford University, and an honorary fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. He works on fundamental issues in physics, particularly the quantum theory of computation and information and especially constructor theory, which he is proposing as a new way of formulating laws of nature.
