Happiness and seeking happiness is hard in part because we have some really crappy intuitions when it comes to the kinds of things that will make us happier. There's evidence that if you're earning around $75,000 just to pick a number that's been studied in the literature, doubling or even quintupling your income won't actually affect your happiness at all. More than 40% of college students report being too depressed to function most days; more than 60% experience overwhelming anxiety.
