At the time of captain cook's arrival Hawaiis native population was estimated to be between 200,000 and 1 million But by 1874 only a century later their numbers had dropped to roughly 50,000. In 1875 king kalakawa signed a free trade agreement with the united states known as the reciprocity treaty which eliminated taxes on Hawaiian sugar. The treaty also allowed the us navy to use a lagoon west of hanalulu called pearl harbor To anchor refuel and repair at ships. Many native Hawaiians and their legislators opposed the american naval presence at pearl harbor. By 1887 thirston also helped organize a secret group of hawli who were sons of christian missionaries named
