At the time of captain cook's arrival Hawaiis native population was estimated to be between 200,000 and 1 million But by 1874 only a century later their numbers had dropped to roughly 50,000. In 1875 king kalakawa signed a free trade agreement with the united states known as the reciprocity treaty which eliminated taxes on Hawaiian sugar. The treaty also allowed the us navy to use a lagoon west of hanalulu called pearl harbor To anchor refuel and repair at ships. Many native Hawaiians and their legislators opposed the american naval presence at pearl harbor.
