In ancient philosophy, we have a distinction between external goals and what we call virtues. We know that people who suffer from clinical depression will typically place more emphasis on the achievement of external goals. And then they feel depressed when they feel to achieve them. But there's another type of goal which is more about your character based, we call it an intrinsic value. It would be like saying the most important thing to me was exercising creativity or having integrity.
