The first advertising on the Internet did not take place until 1994. Gary Thurick sent a mass email to around 400 users in May 1978. Prodigies Online Service had banner ads running at the bottom of every screen. In April 1994, two lawyers from Arizona caused controversy by spamming 5,000 usenet news groups with their services helping aliens get green cards.
