Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

The first tier is non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or general movement. This is actually kind of the show pony, if you will, of weight loss. When you're in a caloric deficit and you're miserable, you don't want to move. But if you're consuming more calories, you're generally happier. And there's a little bit more spontaneous movement that happens. Up to about 8,000 steps a day is kind of like the goal.
