After the English Civil War, in the mid 1600s, the country was briefly ruled by a Puritan named Albert Cromwell. After the monarchy was restored, with Charles II, there was yet another succession crisis. In 1688 they invaded, James fled, and his daughter and son-in-law became the new Queen and King.
