Avicenna and later thinkers like Averois and Maimonides in Andarousia single out Al Farabi as the most important thinker of the early Arabic tradition. Modern scholars have given little thought to Al Farabi's own intellectual context, but he was in some respects a typical member of the Baghdad school. Even if he went beyond their core project of imitating the late ancient commentators on Aristotle, he did write commentaries of his own.
