The Cost of Ultra Processed Food
In the UK, we spend on average about 7% of our household budget on food. We live in a very, very expensive country with huge levels of inequality. For people who live in the lowest 10% of households by income to eat a healthy diet, just one as recommended by the NHS,. they would need to spend more than 75% of their income on food. They wouldn't be able to pay for energy or rent. So I'm really conscious that whenever we talk about this, there is a huge risk of stigmatizing people who are already disadvantaged. The tragedy is that really we live in a food apartheid.
