How Does the Homeostatic Drive to Sleep Work?

sleep is governed by a combination of homeostatic and cicadian factors, or drives, as they're called. So it's the combination of these two factors, which determines when weare actually awake and when we're actually asleep. The homeostatic drive to sleep pushes us to the sleep state; the circadian drive for arousal pushes us into the wake state. We have our fairly low to moderate sleep homeostatic sleep drive and high a circadian arousal drive around midday.
