Melatonin has a short half life. It actually gets out of your body within like, you know, a couple hours. To my knowledge, melatonin's not habit forming. The place where I'd be hesitant is that melatonin really is only going to help you fall asleep. But then once you're asleep, you can sort of maintain it.
