How to Do User Research

The book is about helping people feel more comfortable with the concept of being unprepared or anything can happen. There's lots to be learned, I think, from reading the book, but it's more in the flavor of what you kind of talked about. So sure, learn from your mistakes, but maybe not in the sense that you should not make them again is what I'm thinking.
