I think that the answer to the question depends on how much you zoom out. One of my favorite books, and I'll end on this very somber note, but one of my all time favorite book is a book called rendezvous with drama by Arthur C. Clark. And they say that what happened was that it was just a probe that was traveling through space, and it has nothing to do with earth. It was just passing by.
