Social comparison is such a strong motivator. It can be good, right? The social comparison to someone whose ah swimming a little faster than you can be exactly what it takes to turn you into a champion. But it can also, of course, be detrimental. And it can be really detrimental when that social comparison is to someone who's so far ahead of you that you don't feel like you can possibly catch up.
