Game Designers and Emergent Behavior

There's one thing called emergent behavior, which is a bit of a buzzword now. It's the idea that new patterns emerge spontaneously from the rules. This is quite closely related to some ideas in chaos theory or complexity theory where very simple rules can lead to highly complex, intricate patterns. I think game designers might feel a little bit inspired by that from physics and from maths, and that might be partly what they're going for.
