Our barotfrontal cortex is the part of the brain that stores and determines reward value. It lays out this hierarchy of how rewarding something is relative to other things. If I eat broccoli versus chocolate, my brain's going to compare those two. For me, chocolate's more rewarding than broccoli. So chocolate goes higher in the reward hierarchy. There's a whole mathematical formula for this.
