As an addiction psychiatrist, my primary motive helping my patients with anxiety was medications. Thomas Borkovic proposed that anxiety could be triggered and perpetuated just like any other habit through a process called negative reinforcement. I think my eyes popped out of my head because I never thought about treating anxiety as a habit. Lo and behold, there's a really solid theoretical basis for it and we could create programs. We created this on my anxiety app. And we actually found that we could get huge reductions in anxiety.
Addiction psychiatrist Judson Brewer, M.D. (author, Unwinding Anxiety) explains the surprising connection between bad habits and anxiety. Dr. Jud and Greg discuss how fear, worry, and evolutionary origins contribute to addictive behaviors and cycles. They explore specific techniques and a step-by-step process to effectively reduce anxiety.
