The Origin of Dog in Old English

Dog is a surprisingly new word for such a common pet, and to be found in such a large number of english expressions. The word dog does not appear in english until around the 15 hundreds. Prior to that time, the word was hound, or hund in old english. It's also the root of the word canine in latin, from which english also borrowed the term.
