The Importance of Accent in Chinese

I feel like when I first lived in China and I didn't speak good Chinese at this point, and the job that I had in Guangzhou back in 2017, I was the only foreigner there. And something that I really struggled with linguistically was when people would ask me to do things in Chinese but they sound much more direct in English.
