The Transition to Social Science in a Software Technical Context

Nick Duchino: I was doing social science in a very, you know, software technical context. And then we had a 3 year government grant that where they were interested in, can you infer someone's real world personality and demographics based simply on how they behave in a virtual world? So for that we used World of Warcraft. By this time Blizzard had created a publicly accessible website essentially that revealed thousands of behavioral metrics per active game character. You knew it was the how many kills they had, how much they healed down to the level of how many virtual hugs they'd ever given in the game. We got these really rich longitudinal profiles of how people behave in this very specific context.
