The Importance of the Soul

For Epicurus, ethics is like a medical regime, but for the soul rather than the body. He says in one of his letters that the soul is made of atoms that resemble hot air or wind. It also contains other atoms of a very special sort, even finer than the atoms of wind. This makes the soul uniquely capable of producing sensation. But such a fine network of atoms would simply disperse, if extracted from the body.
