CHAPTER

The Myth of Ashley Babbitt

Ashley Babbitt is seen as having died in an epic historical drama of good versus evil or freedom versus tyranny. Is that why the mythology around her outstrips anything that actually tracks with who she was and what she really did? I would think you could argue queer in practice, if not in theory. She started putting up signs outside her house, Christian, and she starts understanding America as a Christian nation which for her really quickly tracks into a kind of whiteness. And so we need to understand that religion, because how do you speak of whiteness, which doesn't actually exist? It's a kind of a made up thing.
