Niacatonic acid binds to it on the cell surface. It then translocates into the mitochondria in response to that. The butyrate, in a sense, kind of signals how much then for it to be expressed within the same mitochondria. That's contingent upon if there's enough butaryic acid keeping the flux going through the mitochondria.
