Is 10,000 Steps a Day Really the Magic Number?
There doesn't appear to be any scientific data that 10,000 steps is the magic number for health. The symbol for 10,000 in Japanese looks a little bit like a person walking and so it was sort of like you know this we'll call it a 10,000 step thing because we can put this symbol on there that sort of looks like a walking person. Some people are just not walkers. They don't have safe neighborhoods or they have physical conditions that don't let them walk. So if there's a person who needs to go to the gym or the pool or sit on a stationary bike and they're not getting10,000 steps they can feel like they're failing.
