Gustav Zander was a Swedish physiologist who pioneered the use of machines to help workers with physical impairments. He set up an institute in Stockholm that used his equipment, which is remarkably similar to today's fitness facilities. The gym became something of a status symbol for wealthy Cleontel owners as they could afford these expensive machines and do their exercise elsewhere. Vanessa: This is sort of middle class thing. You've got the invention of the weekend. And there's lighting, which means you can do stuff at night. So technology is shifting social patterns and what people do with their free time.
