CHAPTER

How Do Hox Genes Work?

There are gradients that sort of tell the cells which end they're at. The Hox gene is a big one for making sure the head is different from the tail, right? There's a set of Hox genes first discovered by a guy named Ed Lewis working with flies and he was working with flies that turn one body part into another. If I see enough of this signal, I'll turn on this gene which will make me this part of the brain. If I don't see enough ofthis signal, I won't turn on that gene so I'll become this other part of thebrain. So that's kind of how it works.
