Air china provided one set of jepson manuals to the flight crew, which the captain was using during the instrument approach. The width of the downwond leg was narrower than normal, for which corrective actions were inappropriate. When the tower controllers lost visual contact with flight one two nine, aircraft on the downwind and base legs, they tried to find flight one two 9 visually. However, they did not use the tower bright which is an aid to complement visual observations. Gim base local procedures did not specify radar moniting the aircraft on a circling approach by means of the bright or the m s a w systems.
