Polyethylene Glycol 400: A Test for Intestinal Permeability
The polyethylene glycol itself will actually increase intestinal permeability. I just feel a little bit uncomfortable sending my patients for a test that I suspect will actually worsen, even if it's only transiently their symptoms. There are alternative tests, and there is a lot of towing and throwing and debating about the sensitivity and specificity of those tests. But personally I use a double sugar test. And I combine that with markers of inflammation within the intestine called a fecal call protectant. It really reflects what's happening inside the gastrointestinal tract very accurately.
