When you maximise a function, i guess that you're only going down. The first derivative is always flat at the top of a maximum. Changing the variable isn't going to make it go up. What it also means is moving down from this peramelo that you're picking isn’t going to cost you anything. And so it means that you should never be maximizing on any one variable.
