The creator of metacognitive therapy did many studies Investigating exactly that question. He would ask thousands of overthinking students at Manchester University For example, why do you overthink? Why do you do it? And in this very very big studies he would get two answers from these people. One answer would be but I can't help it. It's just me. So one reason we do it a lot Is because we just don't think we have a choice. The other reason we got in the studies were The usefulness answer so people would say I need to spend time on this problem to us to solve it. People realize they can control it and they can choose to not do it all
