The Red Sneakers Effect has been named after a researcher who noticed the phenomenon at scientific conferences. She coded the claving worn by attendees at a series of different academic conferences. The researchers found that wearing jeans and a t-shirt, in other words, a non-conforming style, was significantly correlated with research productivity.
