History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps

CHAPTER

Epictetus Is a Roman Philosopher of Virtue

In common with many other ancient philosophers, epictetus has an ethical theory so demanding that it is hard to imagine how one might ever live up to it. But if anything characterizes roman stoicism, it is attention to the problem of how we make progress towards the goal of perfect virtue. He sees wrong doers not as targets for vengeance, but objects of pity. An evil man is just an ignorant man. Putting an ignorant man to death is akin to executing some one for being blind and deaf.
