Aristotle and Kant - Who Would We Admire More?
The virtuous man enjoys doing these things and does it out of habit. The self controlled man would rather run away in battle, eat like a pig and ignore the old lady. Yet he does the right thing because he knows that's what he's supposed to do. Some one who has to exert will power to avoid snatching old ladies purses seems less admirable than some one who would never consider doing any such thing. But some one who fights bravely in battle, even as every fibre of his being tells him to run is more admirable than people who don't want to fight at all.
