Is There a Risk to Early Cannabis for Addiction?

Someone raised that he uses marijuana to slow down his thinking and is a sleep aid. He wondered if there were risks to this, though we didn't talk about whether he used ADHD meds or not. But he says if there are risks, what are they? And do you recommend an alternative?
