CHAPTER

Cognitive Control and Intelligence

Children who had shown more self control as four year olds had substantially higher scores on tests of intelligence. As young adults, they were less likely to take drugs. Shan frederick constructed a cognitive reflection test which consists of the bat and ball problem and two other questions chosen because they also invite an intuitive answer that is both compelling and wrong. When asked how much they will pay to get overnight delivery of a book they have ordered, the low scorers are willing to pay twice as much as the high scorers. Frederick's findings suggest that the characters in our psycho drama have different personalities. System one is impulsive and intuitive; system too, is capable of reasoning and it is cautious.
