Platonic Philosophy in the Hellenistic Period
For the first few hundred years there was no sign that philosophy would, in due course, become nearly synonymous with Aristotle. In the Hellenistic period, academic philosophy turns out to mean skepticism. The Stoics cared nothing for pleasure; Epicureans put it at the core of their ethics. But none went so far in the pursuit of self-sufficiency as the cynics.
