The Impact of Highways on Urban Population
Between 1958 and 1990, the population of US central cities declined by 17%, even though the population of the United States as a whole grew 72% in metro areas. And through various instruments he estimates that aggregate central city population would have grown about 8% have the interstate highway system not been built so a swing of about 25%. That's an interesting finding, notably that really only looks at the interstates.
