We stole the evil ninja's for kerser times ten not from mario galaxy. gave up on that after like the half hour unskippable storybook cutscene garbage we just and all the waggling to get from place to place. There are kinds of design that lend themselves to pen and paper better than spreadsheet design or upgrade systems. If you're trying to come up with a new game there's literally no other way to do it than to just sit down and try stuff. It's impossible to find new things without actually setting them in motion.
