The Isolation of Bacillus Difficillus
C. difficillus was first isolated in 1935 by microbiologists Elizabeth O'Toole and Ivan Hall. They were looking at the stool flora of 10 newborn babies up until the 10th day of life. Of these 10 babies for were colonized with a bacteria that they had never seen before. Most of the guinea pigs got really severe colitis, 16 of the 22 animals died over the next 9 days. And so they rightly noted like this is a pathogen given how sick these guinea pigsgot,. But for some reason the babies were just fine.
