The story goes that after admiring Princess Metternich's Wirth gown at a ball one evening, Empress Eugenie requested that the fashion designer present himself to her. Royal patronage was considered a badge of honor for fashion houses. In 1853, Eugenie married Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Prince Louis Napoleon. Once the Empress became a client, Wirth's reputation was cemented.
