Is It the Garden of Eden Before European Colonialism?
There is a sort of presumption that if the Westerners get it go into a place, they bring certain evils into an effectively Edenic society. We don't have much information on pre-colonial societies because our knowledge base is hugely biased towards European colonial experience. So living in splendid isolation is not an option for Africa or the Middle East or Southeast Asia or the Pacific at this time; globalization is happening.
