Massimo Pigliucci on Why Virtue Matters

The Daily Stoic

CHAPTER

Aristotle's Courage Is Not the Same as the Cardinal Virtue of Courage

Al-Sibati's courage is sort of an intemperate vice. He gets away with things that other people would have been killed or at any rate, certainly not succeeded. It's like, you can't count on luck for your entire life. At some point, it will turn against you. And that's where you see the real fiber of a real person capable of handling the virtues. If you are already counting on luck in order to make your life and not on your virtues, then that's the end of the game.
