The Importance of Ammonia in Hepatic Encephalopathy
There is no role for ammonia measurements in the diagnosis or management of hepatic encephalopathy, though there might be a role in acute liver failure. Getting an arterial ammonia greater than 200 is associated with higher risk for cerebral edema and herniation. Hypokalemia increases renal ammonia genesis and can precipitate or worsen hepaticEncephalopathy. correcting hypokalemia and HE is essential.
