Staying alertly connected to the world outside myself keeps me from falling into limitations of self absorption. In the reconnection with my own benevolent nature each time it happens protects me from feeling that nothing I or anyone else could do to make a difference. And here's one more detail from the traditional accounts of the Buddha's enlightenment experience. That because the Buddha sounds so human in it is particularly inspiring. He is reported to hesitating before starting out to teach thinking of the enormity of the task before him. Some legends say that heavenly messengers appear to him urging him on reminding him of the benefits about ending suffering. The Buddhist decision to teach was presumably the result of hearing these heavenly messengers
