Churchill didn't know it in the middle of the 1930s, but being out of power during Germany's rearmament was exactly the right place to be. This time allowed Churchill to actively pursue his writing and radio careers which made him a beloved celebrity in America. Could he have had the energy and strength at age 66 to put the country on his back and lead without that supposedly lost decade if he had kept up his breakneck pace? Almost certainly not.
